Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where a mix of herding dogs was sorted into one breed with four coat types in the 1890s. The Groenendael is long and black, the Tervuren long and fawn, the Malinois short and fawn, and the Laekenois rough-coated. The AKC lists them as four breeds and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Adults usually weigh 40 to 75 pounds and stand 22 to 26 inches tall.
A dog labeled Belgian Shepherd in Philadelphia may be any of these types or a mix, and many are Malinois or Malinois mixes. Expect an alert, watchful dog that bonds closely and needs daily exercise and training. The double coat sheds moderately to heavily, with brushing a few times a week and daily during seasonal sheds. Each dog varies, so look at how the dog behaves rather than the label.
