Anatolian Shepherds are livestock guardians from the plateau of central Turkey, where dogs of this type have lived with flocks and watched for wolves and other predators for thousands of years. They don't herd. They stay with the animals and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, usually with a short to medium fawn coat and a dark mask, though many colors occur.
At home, Anatolians tend to be calm, observant and loyal to their family, but the guarding instinct is strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if a fence allows it. They mature slowly, think for themselves and respond poorly to harsh handling. Dogs vary, but expect a long socialization project and a household that welcomes a watchful dog.
