The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the closest to the breed's original job as a water retriever. Under the elaborate show clips sits a square, athletic dog standing well over 15 inches at the shoulder, with a long muzzle, dark oval eyes and a dense, curly coat that comes in solid colors from black and white to apricot, silver and cafe-au-lait.
Standards are often described as clever, sensitive and quietly dignified, with a playful streak that lasts well into adulthood. They usually bond closely with their people and learn quickly, which suits households that enjoy training and shared activity. Their low-shedding coat keeps growing, though, so adopters should plan on professional grooming every month or two plus regular brushing at home, along with daily exercise for a dog that is far sportier than its reputation.
