The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a compact, muscular terrier, 14 to 16 inches tall and usually 24 to 38 pounds, with a short, smooth coat in red, fawn, white, black, blue or brindle, often with white. The breed took shape in nineteenth-century Staffordshire and Birmingham, England, from bulldog and terrier crosses, and was later valued as a family companion.
Many Staffies are affectionate, playful and especially fond of children. They can also be strong-willed, and some won't back down when another dog challenges them, so steady, reward-based training and good leash manners matter. Shedding is moderate and grooming is simple, but they need daily exercise and sturdy chew toys. Dogs vary, and a Staffy's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
