The Labradoodle is a Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross rather than a recognized breed. The idea took off in Australia in 1989, when the cross was tried as a guide dog for someone with allergies. Today Labradoodles come in miniature, medium and standard sizes, with coats ranging from flat hair to soft fleece to tight wool.
Because it's a mix, Labradoodles vary a lot in size, shedding and temperament. Many are friendly, smart and people-focused, with the energy of two working parents. Expect daily exercise, training and professional grooming every six to eight weeks. Low shedding is likely but not guaranteed, and no dog is truly allergy-free. In Tulsa, summer heat and muddy spring walks make coat care a bigger part of the routine.
