The Chow Chow is an ancient spitz-type dog from northern China, known for its lion-like ruff, scowling expression and blue-black tongue. It comes in a rough coat or a shorter smooth one, both double coated, in red, black, blue, cinnamon or cream. Adults usually weigh 45 to 70 pounds, so they're medium-size dogs with heavy bone and a lot of fur.
Chows tend to be dignified, independent and devoted to a small circle of people, and they're reserved with strangers. Many are quiet and clean indoors, but they dislike rough handling and do best with early socialization, calm training and regular brushing. In Tulsa, that also means planning for heavy seasonal shedding and keeping a Chow cool through long summers. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Chow before deciding.
