The Affenpinscher is a German toy breed that began as a stable and kitchen ratter, and its name translates roughly to monkey pinscher. Adults stand about 9 to 12 inches tall and weigh 7 to 12 pounds, with a wiry, shaggy coat that forms a mane around the face. Black is the most common color, and the coat sheds very little.
Most Affenpinschers are confident, curious and a bit comical, with a stubborn streak that shows up during housetraining and leash manners. They bond closely with their people and stay alert to every noise. In Oklahoma City, where winters bring hard freezes and summers run hot, a small indoor dog with a coat that needs regular upkeep is a manageable match. Each dog is different, so its own personality matters more than the breed description.
