Labrador Retrievers descend from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which British sportsmen refined into a steady gun dog for retrieving game from land and water. The thick otter tail, dense water-resistant double coat and webbed feet all trace back to that work. Labs come in black, yellow and chocolate, and field-bred dogs are often leaner and more driven than show-bred ones.
Many Labs are sociable, eager to please and happy with anything involving people or a ball. They also need daily exercise, consistent training and careful portion control, and adolescence can stay bouncy until two or three years old. In Youngstown, that double coat means plenty of shed hair around the house and a dog well padded for cold winters, though every Lab varies.
