The Shar-Pei is a medium-sized dog, usually 45 to 60 pounds, from southern China, where it guarded homes and livestock. Its name means "sand skin" for the harsh, bristly coat, and it's easy to spot by its deep wrinkles, broad muzzle, small folded ears and blue-black tongue. The AKC recognized the breed in 1992.
Many Shar-Peis are calm, clean and devoted to their families, while staying aloof with strangers and sometimes selective about other dogs. In Toledo, that reserve pairs well with a predictable routine and a household that respects its space. The folds, eyes and ears need regular attention, so plan on a veterinarian who knows the breed. Each dog varies, and history and socialization matter as much as breed.
