Labrador Retrievers descend from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which British sportsmen refined in the 1800s into steady gun dogs for retrieving game from land and water. The working past shows in the thick otter tail, dense water-resistant double coat and webbed feet. Labs come in black, yellow and chocolate, and field-bred dogs are often leaner and more driven than show-bred ones.
Many Labs are sociable and eager to please, which is why they're so common as family and assistance dogs. That enthusiasm comes with needs: daily exercise, consistent training and careful portions, since many Labs are strongly food motivated. In Mansfield, expect the double coat to shed heavily as the seasons turn, and a bouncy adolescence that can last until two or three years old.
