Husky is a catch-all name for northern sled-dog types. In Mansfield, a dog labeled a Husky is most likely a Siberian Husky or a Siberian mix, though some are Alaskan huskies or carry Alaskan Malamute ancestry. They share erect triangular ears, a thick double coat, a brush tail and sometimes blue or mismatched eyes. Most weigh roughly 35 to 70 pounds.
Huskies were built to run in teams for hours, so they tend to be friendly, playful and independent, with a strong prey drive and a talent for digging and escaping. They usually howl more than they bark. Expect heavy shedding, especially twice a year, and a dog that needs real work every day. Temperament varies from dog to dog, particularly in mixes.
