The Dachshund is a German hound built to follow badgers underground, which explains the long body, short legs and a bark far bigger than the dog. Standards run roughly 16 to 32 pounds and Miniatures 11 pounds or less, in smooth, longhaired or wirehaired coats. Both sizes are small enough for a Mansfield apartment or a house with a modest yard.
Dachshunds are bold, curious and loyal, often bonding hardest with one person, and they can be stubborn about training and wary of strangers. Their long spine is the main care issue: ramps, a healthy weight and limited jumping protect it. Since Mansfield winters are snowy, plan short, bundled outings and plenty of indoor sniffing games to use up that hunting-dog energy.
