The Pomeranian is a toy spitz that descends from much larger German Spitz dogs and takes its name from Pomerania, a Baltic coast region. The breed standard calls for 3 to 7 pounds, though plenty of pet and shelter Poms run heavier. The double coat stands off the body, with a thick ruff and a plumed tail carried over the back, and it comes in nearly every color.
Poms are bold, curious and quick to bark, and many bond closely with one person. Some are bossy with bigger dogs or nervous about rough handling, so each dog differs. In Dayton, where winters are cold and many homes sit close together, expect regular brushing, daily tooth care and a plan for barking. That small frame also needs protection from falls and large dogs.
