The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed on the plains around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof black-and-tan or harlequin coat, tan "red stockings" and double hind dewclaws all come from that hardy outdoor work. Adults typically weigh 70 to 110 pounds and stand 24 to 28 inches tall.
That working past shows up in Columbus homes as a dog that wants a job. Beaucerons are usually loyal, confident and reserved with strangers, and many bond closely with one or two people. They respond best to calm, consistent training rather than harsh correction. Owners who can fit in daily runs along the greenways, steady socialization and patience while the dog matures tend to do best.
