The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in Australia in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, open country. It's a medium-sized dog, usually 25 to 45 pounds, with a short, hard double coat in black, red, blue, fawn or cream, often with tan points.
Kelpies are alert, quick learners and loyal to their people, though many stay reserved with strangers. A pet Kelpie in Columbus does best with a job, whether that's running the greenways, agility, scent games or trick training. Without one, a Kelpie may herd children, chase bikes, bark or dig. Working-line dogs tend to carry more drive than show-line dogs, and every Kelpie varies.
