American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs brought from Britain in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short, glossy coat in nearly any color.
Most are confident, people-loving and a little goofy with their families, and many like to lean on or climb onto a favorite person. Their strength calls for leash training and early socialization, and some are selective with other dogs even when well raised. In Columbus, that makes a fenced yard or quieter routes a useful starting point. They're also common in shelters and often overlooked, so it's worth browsing the dogs listed here.
