The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog, shaped in the late 1800s and early 1900s from English terriers and feists, with Whippet and Beagle ancestry added later for speed and scenting. Families kept them to clear barns of rats and to hunt squirrels. The breed comes in miniature and standard sizes, usually 10 to 25 pounds, with a short, smooth coat that always includes white.
Many Rat Terriers are cheerful, affectionate and eager to stay close, and they tend to be more biddable than other terriers. They're also quick, curious and fond of digging. In Cincinnati's mix of small yards and hillside lots, plan on secure fencing, daily activity and careful introductions to cats and other small pets, since prey drive varies from dog to dog.
