The Bichon Frise is a small white companion dog with a plumed tail and a loosely curled double coat, descended from Mediterranean dogs that traveled with sailors and later charmed European courts. It was developed as a companion rather than a hunter, which explains the people-focused personality. Adults typically weigh 12 to 18 pounds and live 12 to 15 years.
Low shedding doesn't mean low maintenance. Loose hair stays trapped in the curls and forms mats, so plan on brushing several times a week and professional grooming every four to eight weeks. Bichons aren't allergen-free, and some are slow to house train, which matters when the walk to the yard includes stairs. Dogs vary, so expect some differences from one Bichon to the next.
