Retriever is a type, not a single breed. It covers gun dogs developed to find shot birds and carry them back gently, and on adoption listings it usually means a Labrador or Golden Retriever mix, or a dog with that look and unknown ancestry. Chesapeake Bay, Flat-Coated, Curly-Coated and Toller retrievers belong to the same family.
Most are medium to large, sturdy and food-motivated, with a water-resistant double coat that sheds a lot. Many are sociable and happiest carrying something in their mouths, and a long, bouncy adolescence is common. In Rochester, that means a dog who needs daily outlets through the snowy months and an owner who's fond of the vacuum. Ancestry varies, so a dog's age, size and energy tell you more than the label.
