Hound isn't one breed but a broad group of hunting dogs. Scent hounds such as Beagles, Coonhounds, Foxhounds and Plotts track by nose, while sighthounds such as Greyhounds and Whippets chase by sight. On adoption listings, hound usually means a scent-hound mix with long ears, a short coat and a big voice, often somewhere between 20 and 70 pounds.
Most are sociable and easygoing, a legacy of working in packs. They're also independent and nose-driven, so training takes patience and treats, and recall can't be trusted around a strong scent. Short coats mean moderate shedding and little grooming beyond weekly brushing and ear checks. Because mixes vary so much, the size, energy and voice described for each dog say more than the label.
