The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The aim was a companion dog with a heavier, more muscular build and a calmer, people-loving nature. Bullies come in several size varieties, from compact Pockets to XLs, in nearly every color, with a short coat that needs little more than a weekly brush.
Many are affectionate, eager to please and deeply attached to their families. Their strength makes early training and leash manners important, especially on crowded NYC sidewalks, and tolerance of other dogs varies, so careful introductions help. Weight is worth watching, since a lean Bully is easier on its joints and handles heat better.
