A yellow Lab is a Labrador Retriever in one of the breed's three colors, anywhere from pale cream to fox red. Underneath is a sturdy sporting dog with a dense double coat, an otter tail and a habit of carrying things around. Most are friendly, food-motivated and eager to join in, and they do best with training that uses rewards and a long, patient adolescence.
Reno's sunny high desert adds a few wrinkles. At about 4,500 feet, with sun most of the year, pale noses can burn, and dry, dusty air makes regular brushing worthwhile. Labs gain weight easily, so measured meals and steady exercise matter more than any coat color. Dogs within the breed differ, and field-bred Labs are often more driven than show-bred ones.
