The Dalmatian is a medium, muscular dog with a short white coat and black or liver spots. It began as a carriage dog that trotted beside horse-drawn coaches for miles. That stamina still defines the breed, and it's why Reno's dry, open trails suit a Dalmatian better than a quick loop around the block.
Most Dalmatians are affectionate and playful with their families, though some stay reserved with strangers, and each dog differs. Expect heavy shedding all year, a need for plenty of water, and a coat too thin for a Reno January. Hearing loss and urinary stones come up in the breed, so a vet visit soon after adoption is smart. An adult Dalmatian often shows its energy level more clearly than a puppy, which helps match a dog to your routine.
