The Malinois is the short-haired, fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding dog sorted out in Belgium in the 1890s and named for the Mechelen region. It's a lean, square dog with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year.
Police and military units prize Malinois for their speed, drive and focus, and those same traits make them demanding at home. Many are devoted and sensitive, but a dog without enough exercise, training and structure can turn frantic, destructive or reactive. Dogs vary, and Groenendael and Tervuren relatives sometimes turn up too. In Reno, expect to build each day around outdoor time and a way to cool off in July.
