The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in Australia in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move sheep across hot, dry country. The short, weather-resisting double coat and the stamina were built for long days in sun and dust. Kelpies come in black, blue, red, tan and fawn, with or without tan points, and most weigh roughly 25 to 45 pounds.
Many are alert, loyal and quick to learn, but also intense. Herding instinct can show up as nipping at heels or chasing bikes, and a bored Kelpie may bark or dig. Dogs vary, and working-line Kelpies usually carry more drive than show-line dogs. With trails close by and dry, sunny days most of the year, a Reno adopter who loves daily running and training will find plenty to do together.
