The American Bulldog descends from working bulldogs that settlers brought to the colonies, where they caught loose cattle and feral hogs and guarded Southern farms. The breed nearly disappeared after World War II until John D. Johnson and later Alan Scott revived it, giving us the heavier Johnson, or bully, type and the leaner, more athletic Scott, or standard, type. Many modern dogs blend both.
Adults weigh roughly 60 to 115 pounds and are mostly white, often with patches of red, brown or brindle. Many are affectionate, confident and protective, with stamina to match. In Reno, that means a dog who enjoys a long trail walk but also needs early socialization, reward-based training and secure handling around other dogs on busy paths. Dogs listed as American Bulldogs are often mixes, so size and energy vary.
