Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where a breed club and Professor Adolphe Reul sorted local herding dogs into one breed in 1891. Four coat types exist: the long black Groenendael (the AKC's Belgian Sheepdog), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. All share a square, elegant frame and upright ears.
They're watchful, devoted and built to work, which is why Malinois and their relatives serve as police and military dogs. In Las Vegas, that means a dog that wants a job: morning runs, training and puzzle games. Coat matters here too. Short-coated Malinois are usually easier in desert heat, while Groenendaels and Tervurens carry a dense double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Dogs vary, and mixes are common.
