The Bedlington Terrier came out of the mining towns of Northumberland, England, where it hunted vermin and ran down rabbits. The pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lean and fast, and Whippet ancestry likely explains its speed.
Most Bedlingtons are gentle and affectionate at home, then spring into action at the sight of a squirrel or a lizard. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs regular brushing and professional clipping. The breed carries an inherited liver condition called copper toxicosis, so a veterinarian can advise on DNA testing, liver monitoring and diet. In Vegas, the compact size and quiet indoor manner suit apartments and houses alike, while the strong chase instinct means a leash outside fenced dog runs.
