The Akbash is a white livestock guardian from western Turkey, where shepherds relied on it to live with their flocks and drive off wolves. Its name, akbaş, means white head, and the pale coat helped shepherds tell their dog from a predator in poor light. Tall, lean and long-legged, it blends mastiff power with sighthound speed, typically weighing 75 to 140 pounds, and its double coat sheds heavily once a year.
Many Akbash dogs are calm, quiet and gentle with their own family, yet aloof toward strangers and watchful of unfamiliar dogs. They think for themselves, mature slowly and like to patrol their territory. In Las Vegas that means a secure yard, a cool place to rest through the long summer, and an owner who is comfortable with a dog that guards rather than greets.
