Pit Bull Terrier is a type more than a single breed. The label usually covers American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bullies and mixed dogs with similar broad heads and muscular builds. All trace back to nineteenth-century British bull-and-terrier dogs, and DNA studies show that shelter breed labels are often wrong, so what a particular dog is like matters more than the name on its paperwork.
Most adults weigh 30 to 65 pounds and wear a short, glossy coat that sheds moderately and needs only a weekly brush. Many are affectionate, athletic and happiest indoors with their family. In Santa Fe, that thin coat and a strong pull on the leash are the two things to prepare for, with a warm layer for winter and some early leash training.
