The Appenzell Mountain Dog, or Appenzeller Sennenhund, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain dog breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and a tail that curls over its back.
In Albuquerque, sunny days and the trails around the Sandias give a working dog plenty to do, though this is still a lot of dog. Appenzellers are lively, watchful and often reserved with strangers, and they usually need real exercise and training every day. The breed is rare in the United States, and dogs vary, so a mixed dog may look and act differently.
