The Affenpinscher began as a ratter in German stables, kitchens and granaries, and its name means monkey pinscher, a nod to the bearded, expressive face. It's a toy dog, usually 7 to 12 pounds and 9 to 12 inches tall, with a harsh, shaggy coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders, most often in black. The coat sheds little.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and a bit comical, with more swagger than their size suggests. They tend to be loyal to their people, alert to every noise and sometimes bossy with larger dogs, which is worth remembering at a busy Newark dog park. They suit adults or families with older children who enjoy a characterful dog and can be patient with housetraining. Lifespans typically run 12 to 15 years.
