Labrador Retrievers descend from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which British sportsmen refined into gun dogs for retrieving game from land and water. That history explains the dense, water-resistant double coat, the thick otter tail and the webbed toes. Coats come in black, yellow and chocolate.
Most Labs are eager to please, strongly food motivated and slow to mature, with a bouncy adolescence that can last until two or three years old. Field-bred dogs are usually leaner and more driven than show-bred ones. In Hamilton Township's four-season climate, expect heavy shedding in spring and fall, so regular brushing and a sturdy vacuum come with the dog.
