The Basset Hound began in France as a low-slung trailing hound, bred to follow rabbit and hare scent at a pace hunters could keep on foot. The heavier, more wrinkled type seen today was later developed in Britain. Short legs, long ears and a very sensitive nose make it easy to recognize, and that nose is second only to the Bloodhound's for ground scent.
At home, Bassets are usually mellow, friendly and good with kids and other dogs, though many are stubborn and loud when a smell or boredom takes over. They gain weight easily, need regular ear and skin fold cleaning, and do best when stairs and jumping are limited. Expect an easygoing companion, not a fast jogging partner, though every Basset has its own personality.
