The American Foxhound was developed in colonial Maryland and Virginia from English and French hounds to follow a scent for hours. It's a tall, lean scent hound with long legs, a short hard coat in any color and long, soft ears. Most stand 21 to 26 inches and weigh 55 to 70 pounds, lighter and leggier than the English Foxhound.
In Omaha, that history shows up in everyday ways. A hound's nose can pull it off a sidewalk in seconds, and its bay carries through thin walls. Many are sweet and easygoing with people and other dogs, but they're independent and food-driven, and each dog varies. Some come out of hunting kennels and need patience learning stairs, couches and house rules.
