The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. The goal was a companion dog with a heavy, muscular frame and a people-loving nature. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 2013, but the American Kennel Club does not. Bullies range from compact Pockets to tall XLs.
In a four-season city like Omaha, the details of size and build matter. A short-coated, heavily muscled Bully usually needs a coat in the coldest weeks and shade and rest in summer humidity. Their strength makes leash manners and early training important, and tolerance of other dogs varies from one Bully to the next. Most are happiest living indoors as part of the household.
