Border Collies come from sheep country along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted a dog that could gather and move a flock with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with a rough or smooth double coat that's most often black and white but comes in many colors.
That working past explains the personality. Many Border Collies are quick, eager learners who bond closely with their people, and many need a daily task to stay settled. Without one, some invent their own, from staring down passing joggers to nipping at heels. Dogs vary, and a calmer adult can suit a less athletic home, but every Border Collie needs a plan for exercise and mental work.
