Rottweilers trace back to the German market town of Rottweil, where drover dogs moved cattle to market and pulled butchers' carts. Later the breed worked as police, search and guard dogs. A Rottweiler is a powerful, compact dog with a short black coat, rust markings and a calm, watchful look, and adults commonly weigh anywhere from about 75 to 135 pounds.
At home, many Rotties are affectionate, playful and fond of leaning on their people, though they stay reserved with strangers. That confident, protective streak calls for early socialization and steady, reward-based training. The short coat sheds moderately and mostly needs regular brushing, but these dogs like a job, whether it's training games, tracking or long walks. Every Rottweiler is different, and adult dogs often show their personality clearly, which can make matching easier.
