Labs were developed in Britain from Newfoundland's St. John's water dogs as retrieving gun dogs, and that past explains the thick otter tail, webbed feet and dense, water-shedding coat. They come in black, yellow and chocolate. Field-bred dogs tend to be leaner and higher-drive than show-bred ones, so two Labs can feel quite different at home.
A Lab's sociable streak suits a city of neighborhood parks and greenways, but the coat sheds noticeably all year and heavily when the seasons change. Adolescent Labs can stay bouncy and mouthy until two or three years old, so an adult or senior dog can spare you much of the chewing stage. A dog's history and personality matter more than the breed label.
