The Leonberger is a giant working-group dog from Leonberg, Germany. It was developed in the 1800s from Newfoundland, Saint Bernard-type and Great Pyrenees dogs, with the goal of a companion that looked like the lion on the town's crest. Adults weigh roughly 90 to 170 pounds and wear a thick, water-resistant double coat, often with a mane and always with a black mask.
Most Leonbergers are gentle, calm and closely attached to their families, but size is the challenge. In Wilmington that means brushing a heavy coat through humid weather, budgeting for giant-breed food and vet care, and training early. Expect a lifespan of about seven to ten years. Dogs vary, so spend time with the dog in front of you rather than assuming.
