Great Pyrenees began as flock guardians in the Pyrenees mountains, working alone through cold nights and making their own calls about threats. That history shows up in Raleigh homes as calm confidence, a deep bark and a habit of patrolling the yard after dark. The thick white double coat was made for mountain weather, so it sheds heavily and handles a Raleigh winter easily.
Most Pyrs are gentle with their families and patient with respectful kids, but they're reserved with strangers and slow to follow commands they find pointless. Plan on early socialization, reward-based training, a securely fenced yard and a leash on every walk, since many roam. Pyrs and Pyr mixes also appear in shelters often, so mixes with a similar look and temperament are worth a second look.
