The Malinois is the short-haired, fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, named for the Mechelen region of Belgium. It's a lean, square dog with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat. Most registries treat the Belgian Shepherd as one breed with four coat varieties, while the AKC lists four separate breeds. Adults usually weigh 40 to 80 pounds.
Police and military units prize Malinois for speed, focus and drive, and that same drive makes them a lot of dog at home. Many are devoted, sensitive and eager to work, but a bored Malinois can turn destructive or reactive. In Raleigh, that means daily greenway miles and real training, not just a walk around the block. Working-line dogs often need even more, and each dog varies.
