Scottish Highland farmers and hunters relied on the Cairn Terrier to squeeze into the rock piles, or cairns, that dot the countryside and bolt foxes and vermin hiding inside. The result is a short-legged, sturdy little working terrier with a broad, foxy head, small upright ears and a harsh, weather-resistant double coat that can be wheaten, red, gray, brindle or nearly black, but never white. Many brindle Cairns change color for years as they mature, and the breed is famous as Toto in The Wizard of Oz.
Cairns tend to be cheerful, curious and confident, friendly with most people yet independent enough to ignore a request they find dull. Adopters should expect digging, a strong urge to chase small animals and barking when bored. In return, the breed is usually long-lived, hardy and portable, with a low-shedding coat that stays neat with weekly brushing and periodic stripping.
