Spaniel isn't one breed but a family of bird-flushing dogs, from Cockers and English Springers to Boykins and water spaniels. Many adoptable spaniels are Cocker or Springer types or mixes, with long feathered ears, silky or wavy coats and soft expressions. Most are affectionate and eager to please, and they bring a busy nose and real energy.
Care centers on the coat and ears. Brushing keeps feathering from matting, and drop ears need regular checks, especially after baths or swims. Because the label covers so many mixes, a spaniel might weigh 20 pounds or 50, and some are calm lap dogs while others work like field dogs. Meet the dog, look at its energy level, and match it to your routine.
