The Rat Terrier is an American farm dog, developed in the late 1800s and early 1900s from English terriers and feists, with Whippet and Beagle ancestry added later for speed and scenting. Families kept them to clear barns of rats and to hunt squirrels. They come in miniature and standard sizes, always with white in a smooth, pied coat, and the AKC fully recognized the breed in 2010.
Many are affectionate, upbeat and more biddable than other terriers, with plenty of energy and a strong prey drive. In Greensboro, that means squirrels in every older neighborhood, a need for secure fencing, and caution around small pets. Dogs vary, so spend time with the dog in front of you rather than relying on the breed description.
