The Great Pyrenees began as a livestock guardian in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, where big white dogs stayed with flocks and faced down wolves and bears. That history explains the modern dog: a giant, thickly coated Pyr with a plumed tail, double rear dewclaws and a calm, deliberate way of moving. Most weigh 85 to 120 pounds and live 10 to 12 years.
Many Pyrs are gentle and devoted at home, yet they were bred to make decisions alone. They can be slow to obey, wary of strangers and inclined to bark at night or wander if a fence has a weak spot. In a Greensboro neighborhood, nighttime barking and a secure fence are worth thinking through before adopting. Each Pyr is different, and Pyr mixes are common.
