Cattle Dog is a label more than a single breed. Most dogs listed this way are Australian Cattle Dogs, known as Blue or Red Heelers, or mixes with one, though Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies or Labs also appear. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia, where collie-type herders were crossed with dingoes to create a tough drover that moves cattle by nipping at their heels.
Expect a compact, muscular dog with a short double coat that sheds moderately, plus plenty of stamina and a sharp, independent mind. Many bond closely with one household, stay wary of strangers and want a job to do. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so how the dog in front of you actually behaves tells you more than the label does.
