The Black Mouth Cur is a Southern working dog, developed by farmers and hunters to tree squirrels and raccoons, bay hogs, move cattle and guard the homestead. Its exact roots in Tennessee or Mississippi are debated, and the United Kennel Club recognized it in 1998. Most have a short, dense yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat, often with the dark muzzle behind the name.
Adults usually weigh 40 to 95 pounds and carry plenty of muscle and stamina. Many are deeply loyal, protective and wary of strangers, and they tend to be sensitive to harsh handling. Cur types are common across the South, and a dog's size, energy and manners can differ a lot from one to the next. They do best with daily exercise, calm training and secure fencing.
