The American Foxhound is a tall, lean scent hound developed in colonial Maryland and Virginia from English and French hounds. It has long legs, long soft ears and a short, hard coat in any color, and it was built to follow a trail for hours across rough country. Most weigh 55 to 70 pounds and live 10 to 13 years.
Many Foxhounds are sweet, easygoing and comfortable around other dogs, a trait from working in packs. They're also independent, food-driven and led by their noses, with a loud, musical voice. Hounds that come from hunting packs may need help learning house manners, crate time and leash walking. Dogs vary, so look at each hound's own energy and comfort level.
