The Belgian Laekenois (say "LAK-in-wah") is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It's named for the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, and these shepherds also guarded linen laid out to bleach in the fields. The American Kennel Club added the breed to its Herding Group in 2020.
The coat is harsh, tousled and fawn to reddish, with a dark muzzle. Laekenois are intelligent and devoted to their families, and they usually learn fast. They also need real work for their minds, such as tracking, agility or scent games. Regular brushing and occasional trimming keep the coat in order, and seasonal shedding means a little more brushing in spring and fall.
